MORE ABOUT BRUS TRIO:
BRUS TRIO was borned a late night during a jamsession at the Fasching jazzclub in Stockholm in fall 1981. The two young musicians Arne Forsén and Ulf Åkerhielm from the north of Sweden were new in the Stockholm jazz life and happened to meet the considerable more experienced Gilbert Matthews from South Africa, also a new flower in Stockholm.
From the very first moment there arised a peculiar and tight interplay with inspiration from a lot of diversed music. The varied expressions of jazz share the space with impulses from the classical education of Forsén and Åkerhielm, the african roots of Matthews and folk music from Sweden and the rest of the world.
The music is characterized of an improvisatoric playfulness with a starting point in original compositions of the members. BRUS TRIO has from the start been recognized as a group with an integracy and expression which is totally its own.
BRUS TRIO has also done a several attended projects with Swedish and internationally well recognized artists. Of these projects with the saxophonists John Tchicai, Charles Tyler and Roscoe Mitchell are released on LP/CD.
For about ten years BRUS TRIO did not appear on the music scene, but since 2006 they are back in business. In spring 2008 BRUS TRIO started a new and inspiring project with Fredrik Nordström - saxophone) and Mats Äleklint - trombone. This cooperation resulted in the album "Celebration", released in fall 2011.
BRUS TRIO has toured in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, France, Belgium, Checkoslovakia (Slovenia), Yugoslavia (Serbia and Kosovo), Estonia, Russia (Sibiria). They have also participated in several radio- and TV-productions, and LP/CD-releases.

ARNE FORSÉN -- piano (b. 1960)
A pianist with a rare range in his register. Wanders with predilection between various musical expressions and besides for BRUS TRIO he has been heard together with free improvisers as Paul Lovens, Harri Sjöström, Phil Minton and Roger Turner, the swedish singer Pia Olby, swedish folk music fiddlers, saxophonist Roland Keijser, in Sune Spångberg Trio and in a new project with kora-player Alagi M´Bye from Gambia.
Cooperates willingly with other forms of arts like dance, fine arts, theatre etc
Forsén has for a number of years showed a special interest for compostions by the swedish legends of jazz Lasse Werner and Kurt Lindgren.
Lecturer in piano and improvisation at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
ULF ÅKERHIELM -- doublebass (b. 1962)
The extraordinary and exceptional musicality of Åkerhielm was early attended and he has a solid ground in both conventional and free forms of jazz. Together with a classical education and experience (for instance in the Swedish Radio Symphonic Orchestra), interest for swedish folk music (at presence in the string ensemble Bowing Nine), and an unique musical fantasy this creates Åkerhielms very personal and fascinating treatment of the doublebass.
Åkerhielm has also worked together with the improvisers Lovens and Sjöström and works at the moment in Lisa Ullén Quartet, with guitarist Andy Fite and in Sune Spångberg Trio.
GILBERT MATTHEWS --drums (b. 1943)
Matthews is borned and raised in South Africa but has lived in Sweden since the beginning of 1980-ties. The sensitive, communicative and rhythmical driving way of playing the drums makes Matthews coveted among the audience and musicians. Matthews has an exclusive ability to in an adaptable way support and give impulses which contributes to an fresh and lively ensemble interplay.
Matthews has toured the world around with a number of musicians from the international scene. Some exemples are Johnny Dyani, Chris McGregor and Archie Shepp.
Just after he arrived to Sweden he became member in the quartet of the swedish altoist Christer Boustedt, which after his decease continued in the of Contemporary Swedish Quintet.
