The MOST COMMON feedback I give PHOTOGRAPHERS
9 TIPS for MORE REFINED SHOTS

Photography is — in part — a process of removing everything that we don’t need in the frame. But this is where a lot of beginners’ work falls down. There’s often too much stuff in the shot; too much distraction, and this leads to shots that lack both aesthetic and narrative focus.
So here are 9 tips to help you create more refined shots.

00:00 Explaining the Problem
02:18 Use a Longer Focal Length
05:12 Go Black and White
06:36 Use Long Exposures
07:17 Use Colour
08:49 Change Your Angle
10:47 Use Negative Space
13:19 Crop Your Images
14:29 Removing Things in Post (The Dark Arts)

Jamie, content aside, I see your visuals are still the gold standard in all of youtube land.

When Jamie Windsor posts I drop what I’m doing and watch the video 👌🏻

Dude knows how to make a video that is information dense, thought provoking, informative, and entertaining. All without a wasted moment on any kind of nonsense. I respect the hell out of it.

Jamie, I am so, so glad that you only post when you want to. The quality you put out puts anything to shame that’s posted purely for consistency’s sake. Your videos are approachable and helped me a lot when I was a beginner, but as someone who has stepped into professional photography, I still come away with inspiration from your videos. I think this goes to show that you provide quite a bit of depth (especially for a Youbtube channel, when most content on this platform is pretty shallow), but explain it in really clear terms through on-point scripting, examples and really useful animation work. Also, the attention to detail in your animations is incredible! They add something playful which to me just communicates how passionate you are. That in itself is inspiring! =)

Jamie, as a long-time subscriber and intermediate hobbyist photographer, I just want to express how grateful I am. You're hands down the best teacher I've come across in photography. My relationship with photography feels almost sublime, and your videos are like reading a sacred text—genuinely. As someone else mentioned, the visuals are absolutely immaculate!

Whenever you drop a new video, I always make sure to carve out time to watch (and rewatch) it religiously.

I hope you're in better health, and I wish you all the best.
Love from India!

I love these videos, you use a lot of subtle visuals while maintaining a calm video which has some great insights. You also assume your audience is knowledgeable which is a relief on youtube. Thanks for the great work!

I’m so happy to leave this like and comment because I knew you were having bad times not long ago, and seen you again was really comforting and illustrative (but that last one is ever present on them). So happy to see you creating and inspiring !

One word to describe this video - generous - I think it is a gift to many aspiring photographers and I found it invigorating and thought-provoking, so thank you for sharing these words of wisdom and inspiring images. You turned me onto a number of new photographers to follow

Amazing episode, Jamie. Very generous knowledge. I have just one addition to cropping and the use of long lenses to focus on the elements - I have a strong relationship with proximity to subjects and wide angle lenses allow you to get close in a way that gives off a presence that cannot be matched by longer or cropped photographs. That's just my one pence.

Nice to find a genuinely useful photography video for a change! I do try to use some of these elements in my photography but it’s nice to have all these composition and editing guides in one handy video. Photography is a never ending learning experience and I find it is always useful to keep guides like these in mind when out photographing and reviewing the final edited photos. Often I find photos I like can still lack something and it’s useful to try to understand how I can improve next time, especially if I have the luxury to revisit a particular location.

Every time one of these videos gets posted; I rush to watch it. Of all the photographer's channels I follow, this channel has the most thoughtful, well-made and useful videos. I feel about them the same way I feel about some of my favorite shows or documentaries. As usual, this video is a commentary, an introduction to artist photographers, a guide to practical information, and a motivation video that makes you think and want to try something new. Thank you for these, I am going to pick up my camera now.

Honestly, I'm amazed how this video is well made, the explanation is so calm and entertaining. This video probably summarised all of composition and it's various types.
Enjoyed every moment. Thank you Jamie 🙏

I just wanted to say that your creative presentations, cracking topics and superb delivery make this channel an absolute never miss whenever anything you produce hits my feed. I’ve taken photos most of my life in many differing areas of interest and your historical, factual referencing and presentation is just revitalising for me. I love looking up the people you reference if I don’t know their work already. Thank you for your considerable effort and time to bring these videos to us.

I've been unfollowing a huge number of channels (I simply don't care about gear); but, it's a pleasant surprise to see you pop up, Jamie.
