BULLET
INTRODUCTION:
The "smart bullets" — have homing capabilities i.e they can change course mid air to meet the target.
The system has been developed by DARPA's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance programme, known as EXACTO.
GOAL:
The program sought to improve sniper effectiveness and enhance troop safety by allowing greater shooter standoff range and reduction in target engagement timelines.
TECHNOLOGY
--The 50-caliber bullets are equipped with optical sensors in their tips for target acquisition
--The bullets have own ‘fins’ to direct itself in flight & act according to the information provided by optical sensor
--The EXACTO bullet functions in a similar manner to a laser-guided bomb
ADAVANTAGES:
— Better accuracy over long ranges
— Better hit rate against moving/evading targets
— Better target engagement rate i.e hitting more targets in lesser time
CONCLUSION:
DARPA's EXACTO program has opened the doors for guided projectiles across all calibers. The miniaturization of the guidance system is a big step forward to the once simple bullet.
This will provide the snipers of US Armed forced with a distinct advantage in battles of future .
