The Residents - The Making of a Soul (Vinyl, 1974/78)

Second track off the album "Not Available" (US pressing, Ralph Records/The Cryptic Corporation/MVD Audio MVD5122LP)

Not Available, originally recorded in 1974 as a follow-up to Meet the Residents, was shelved in accordance with N. Senada's Theory of Obscurity with no plans to release until The Residents had completely forgotten about it. By 1978, however, their company The Cryptic Corporation realized that there has to be some sort of way to follow up the cult classic Duck Stab with another album, as the recording of 'Eskimo' was continually delayed. As such, The Residents were forced to release Not Available. And boy, what a decision it was.

Not Available - stated in the album's liner notes as an "exercise in group therapy" - is the most accessible of The Residents' 1970's material. It's a four-part concept album and a surreal, twisted rock opera, with some quirkiness here & there, such as African American folklore character Uncle Remus providing occasional narration!
This video utilizes a recording of MVD Audio's 2010 vinyl reissue, with 7 extra minutes of previously released material. The new last two minutes of "Ship's A'Going Down" are spellbinding. I keep humming the melody there over and over. Even if you already own Not Available, it's worth picking up the 2010 reissue for the "new" material. 🙂
Lyrics:
Chorus:
Edweena went to calumet and left from there to college
She took along a Porcupine whose name was known as knowledge
Now their relationship was fraught with pangs of loving hunger
The Porcupine could question all, but all she new was slumber
Porcupine:
A huge easy cozy wants our kiss to triumph,
But unbelievable admits --
Some questions receive a guarantee to shake you up
How much marriage urges a windmill to pinch infinity?
Is a magic hid-a-bed the final home of Spanish fire?
Is firm corn merrier under gifts of less important love?
We wonder... but fantasy moves ahead
For the iceman just took a turn for the better!
And a small object flies from his mouth;
A daring jewel scales down the belted ear system
And you have the modular optimistic silver original!
Welcome to the offshoots of Jupiter.
Chorus:
Edweena never knowing why her friend would ramble so
She shut him out and left a pout to bleed upon the snow
Porcupine:
Mourning Glories open
only after noon begins
The open and the broken
have begun to blend again
They freeze a shape about the nape
of nectar and of knee
They leave a sleeve, they weave a grieve
for mourning's never free
Mourning Glories open
only after noon begins
The open and the broken
have begun to blend again
They freeze a shape about the nape
of nectar and of knee
They leave a sleeve, they weave a grieve
for mourning's never free
...mourning's never free...
...mourning's never free!
Uncle Remus:
The aching and the breaking are the making of a soul!
The aching and the breaking are the making of a soul!?
The empties that have been returned relieve us of a goal
Chorus:
Now who is gone and who is right
And who is left to see?
For who is left is just a few
Can two be more than...three?

Do you mean the extended 2010 CD version, or the original, un-extended version?
