Nalanda University: The Lost Wonder of Ancient India | History, Destruction & Revival
Discover the incredible story of Nalanda University, an ancient center of learning that was once among the largest and most prestigious universities in the world. Located in the heart of Bihar, India, Nalanda attracted students from far beyond India’s borders, including places like China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and Persia. Much like today's Harvard, Oxford, and London Business School, this world-class institution was the crown jewel of India’s education system, with a focus on Buddhism, but soon expanded to various subjects like medicine, architecture, mathematics, and more.
Established during the Gupta dynasty in the 5th century by Emperor Kumaragupta I, Nalanda became a beacon of global knowledge. It housed a vast library called DharmaGanj, home to over 9 million books on topics ranging from Vedas to philosophy, astronomy, and medicine. Famous scholars such as Acharya Shilabhadra, Padmasambhava, and Dinnaga taught here, while renowned Chinese travelers Hiuen Tsang and I-tsing studied and documented their experiences at this revered institution.
But what led to the fall of this once-glorious university?
One popular theory suggests that Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed Nalanda in 1193 AD by setting its libraries ablaze, reducing centuries of knowledge to ashes. However, other theories indicate that the university's decline might have started earlier, either through a fire caused by stored materials or due to reduced funding after the establishment of Vikramshila University by King Dharmapala.
The fall of Nalanda marked a tragic end to India’s position as a global leader in education. However, in recent years, efforts to revive its glory have been made. In 2016, the archaeological site of Nalanda was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The modern Nalanda University now stands as a symbol of India's deep-rooted academic heritage, with Nobel laureate Amartya Sen serving as its first Chancellor and George Yeo following in his footsteps.
