Remembering the legend of Bluegrass Earl Scruggs 🪕
.
January 6th: On this day 1924
Born on this day in Shelby, North Carolina, was Earl Scruggs the American musician noted for perfecting and popularizing a 3-finger banjo-picking style (now called Scruggs style). Worked with Bill Monroe in the “Blue Grass Boys”, scored the hit as Flatt and Scruggs with “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” for the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies in 1962. Scruggs died from natural causes on March 28, 2012, in a Nashville hospital.
Scruggs received four Grammy awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a National Medal of Arts. He became a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1985, Flatt and Scruggs were inducted together into the Country Music Hall of Fame and named, as a duo, number 24 on CMT’s “40 Greatest Men of Country Music”. Scruggs was awarded a National Heritage Fellowshipby the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor in the folk and traditional arts in the United States. Four works by Scruggs have been placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame. After Scruggs’ death in 2012 at age 88, the Earl Scruggs Center was founded in Shelby, North Carolina, near his birthplace with the aid of a federal grant and corporate donors. The center is a $5.5 million facility that features the musical contributions of Scruggs and serves as an educational center providing classes and field trips for students.

I grew up listening and watching Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys on the Martha White Flour Hour. I always listen to the Earl Scruggs Review back in the 70's, and 80's.
Earl Scruggs was the master.

You don't usually get goose-bumps from an 80+ year-old man. THIS was an exception.

I had the pleasure to meet this man and stay at his home .my father and I built a 1963 Ford thunderbird.his grand son who was a neighbor of mine fell in love with the car and asked if he could buy it for his grand father.we agreed upon a price.he purchased the car and asked me to deliver it to his grandparents in person so they could meet the builder, I agreed and drove the car from California to Richmond Virginia. I meet earl at his home.he liked the car and asked if I would like to spend the night with his family and friends I said yes .I had a great time with him and his wife and family.

Place just erupted when that band swept in. Even ole Earl couldn't help but smile. If that don't get you going, folks, your wood's wet.
