I love how Stannis is the only character in the show that was skeptical in regards to Jon's backstory. The only character to go "yeah, uh.. I dunno man, that doesn't sound like Ned.".

Stannis is in awe of jon. Normally you see Stannis glum and solemn but in this scene he looks genuinely content he’s found someone as honourable as jon and his respect for him is through the roof at this point. Jon mirrors him for duty and bravery above everything else.

Stannis watching Jon Snow train others is similar to Ned Stark watching Jon and Robb teaching Bran how to shoot bow and arrow .

Stannis in my opinion knows that honor and duty in westeros is practically extinct so its a surprise to meet someone in the most unlikeliest of places like the nights watch what has a rep for being a dwelling for thieves and rapers and in that order a person like jon snow is there who is honourable and still respects the nights watch.

Selyse dismissing Jon along with the "I should've given you a son" was obviously a cover for the respect she had for Jon, wishing that she could've had a son like Jon with Stannis.

Stannis was the Bastard Buster 6000. He deduced that Cersei's children are bastards, tracked down all of Robert's bastards in King's Landing (with Jon Arryn) and knew that there was more to Jon Snow than meets the eye

As for Jon...he always refers to stannis as the king or king stannis..even in books.

Stanis was never ashamed of his daughter nor did he treat his wife badly. He was rude but really good man.

Stannis is a genius. In the books it’s stated Ned Stark took a liking to Ashara Dayne (Sir Arthur Dayne’s sister) whenever he took Dawn back to Starfall (where the Dayne’s lived). Stannis most likely thought that he fathered a bastard pre-marriage than battlefield infidelity

If you can look past Selyse being a terrible mother for a second, letʻs acknowledge the softer side of Stannis in this scene. The way he says, “It’s not your fault” there’s a level of empathy and compassion that we hardly see in him. We all know how much he desires for a son, a male heir, for several reasons and it weighs on him heavily. But you can tell he’s sincere when he tells her he doesn’t blame her, she shouldn’t blame herself. Even though she is awful
