#mars #space #neildegrassetyson #terraforming #science #education In this short, Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how adaptation works. He also discusses what the adaptation possibilities may be, if we live on Mars for a long period of time and then return to earth where the gravity is different.

Epigenetics is a form of adaptation during one individual's lifetetime, actually (to the environment).

Creatures do adapt. Not perfectly, or to everything, but creatures do adapt. They get used to things, like the cold or high heat. We toughen the bottoms of our feet if we walk barefoot. The body can compensate for some things.

its how this astro- physicist speaks with such confidence on matters beyond his field

Tyson must have a private dictionary that defines "adaptation" as "evolution."

That's why physicist should not poke their head in biology.

It's been my experience that some PhDs just can't recognize they are hyperspecialized, so they start pontificating on fields well outside their fields of study with the same confidence they have in their chosen specialization.

Bones: *Exist and adapt to stimuli
Neil: Well actually -

Neil is a physicist but clearly not a biologist. Organisms adapt to their environment all the time.

Tyson is the living embodiment of the 'sir, this is a wendys' meme.

Neil is perfect example why Intelligence and Wisdom are 2 separate things

His mind just crumbles when he thinks he might not be the smartest person in the room

Skin: adapts to sunny environments by creating melatonin
Sweat glands: cool you off in hot environments
Feet: adapt to harsh ground by producing cornea

Neil: So yeah guys, the human body doesn't do that.

Does your bone structure and musculature and circulatory system not change to the environment from which you're currently in?

A better way to say this is:
Individuals do not evolve, rather populations do. Yes, our bodies(and other living organisms) have the ability to adapt to certain conditions and environments; however, natural selection(and the other mechanisms of evolution) affect populations, not individuals.

Just keep in mind that Tyson is not an evolutionary biologist, his expertise is in He can get things wrong just like the rest of us. Lol 😝

I think the word that he was, "to acclimate" or something similar to "acclimate" but adapt is used in its stead, a lot. "Adapt" and "evolve" were basically synonymous in this explanation and not everybody always uses it that way. A lot of times "adapt" is also used synonymously with "acclimate".

Love the clip from The Expanse, was thinking about the same thing with the Belter coming down into "The Well."

Phenotypic plasticity would like to have a word with Neil.
