Well, when I was a kid, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were our neighbors...
However, Hungary lost the match against the Soviets at the soccer World Cup of 1986 by 0-6, and a few years later, The Soviet Union collapsed. Then, when the still existing Yugoslavia (containing only Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo) beat Hungary in soccer at the 1998 World Cup qualification by 7-1 and 5-0, and the few years later, the remained Yugoslavia collapsed too.
So that's why I'm worried about Netherlands, after beating us at the World Cup qualification of 2014 by 8-1...

Some other extinct countries are:
Persia (Now known as Iran)
Austria-Hungary (Which you mentioned a bit in this video)
North and South Yemen
Texas (Which just like Hawaii is now a US State)
Prussia
Ceylon (Now known as Sri Lanka)
Bengal (Now known as probably Bangladesh which was a state of India before)
California
West Germany
El Stronato (Now known as mostly Paraguay
Gran Colombia (Made up of today's Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela)
Mesopatamia (Made up of parts of Arab countries like Syria and Iraq)
Newfoundland (Which is now a province of Canada which is where I live)
New Granada (It was made up of few Spanish colonial provinces in South America)
Ottoman Empire (Which was very big covering a size of about 1.8 million km²)
Sikkim (Which is super small and now part of India)

Fascinating. I had heard of nearly all of them because I am old, but the maps showing the break ups of large blocs are invaluable in helping me understand. I am ok on Europe and Russia but woefully ignorant about South America. Excellent posting, thanks very much. 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

I've got so many of these, but the ones I think would be best to add would be things like Tannu Tuva and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

I believe Zaire and Anguilla should not be included in this list as they have more or less just changed the name. If changing names was also one of the criteria then there are numerous countries that can have been includes in this list like ceylon siam, swaziland etc.

Your examples 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 were all countries when I was a child, so most of this is not news to me.

Fun fact: Czechoslovakia might be the only one of them all, who can reform today successfully.

Panama was never a part of Central America. It gained its independence from Spain in 1821, joined the Gran Colombia along with Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador and Separated from Colombia in 1903. Currently celebrating its Bicentenial from Spain on the 28th of November

A country named Gran Colombia, which was a unification of countries known today such a Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama, it collapsed in 1830, 12 years after it's birth fighting off the spanish empire, due to political disagreements whether being a centralized or federalist country, you should look into it!

Well, South Vietnam and East Germany still exist... kind of. They are just part of bigger states now. If e.g. Korea was reunified, we most likely wouldn't say "Now South (resp North) Korea doesn't exist any more" but rather "The Rep. of Korea (resp. the DPRK) doesn't exist any more", because that would make a lot more sense. ;)
I'm looking forward to part 2 :)
