An Interview with Juliette Binoche

Among actresses (let alone French actresses), Juliette Binoche has carved out a singular place for herself in our contemporary cinematic landscape. She has appeared in over seventy films, won numerous awards, and the international roster of directors with whom she has worked is staggering, from Abbas Kiarostami and Krzysztof Kieślowski to Lasse Hallström and David Cronenberg. Equally at ease in both French and English language roles and unafraid of shunning the mainstream (she turned town Steven Spielberg’s offer for a role in Jurassic Park), Binoche continues to build an impressive and multifaceted body of work. In anticipation of the actress’s latest film, Claire Denis's Let the Sunshine In, Fandor sat down with Binoche to discuss everything from her new role and past collaborations to the nature of being a woman in the film industry, and the importance of living in the moment. Beyond the resume stands a poised and powerful woman, an artist whose youthful energy and ongoing narrative show no signs of slowing down.

Her acting literally hounds you mystically. She has so much depth in her little small things of life.

There are few celebrities who would render me completely speechless were I to meet them, and she’s number one. Then you watch an interview like this in which she again shows how relatable and amazing, ordinary and extraordinary she is, and you want to marry her.

I'll put it as simply as I can for you you film industry critics of male superiority,
women simply don't have the chin for it.
For the love of Mary it must be perceived in this way,
else we stand to lose so much more than our sense of pride.

God bless
