So here we have Link Faces of evil the first in the cdi meme trilogy. I played this game on official hardware (so it's not the remaster) with the most OK cdi controller and RGB cables for best image quality.
This game isn't as bad as it seems but the direction and balancing could be better, but that's not unusual for games of the time. The scenes are great fun and the backgrounds look beautiful but very confusing in terms of what you can walk on.
Gameplay wise you get 3 continues for each time you enter the stage if you don't continue you go to main map and each time you go to main map you get fully healed, that's all really generous.
What isn't generous is how there's no invincibility frames and enemies literally eat you up in seconds if you don't kill them. Also accessing the menu is done through a combination of Down and button 2... which when performed at a door will send you to the previous room and also means you cant use any abilities when crouching. Not to mention enemies respawn way too many times and the flying enemies are VERY inconsistent about their height of attack which seems to vary per location (the same red bird may or may not be able to hit you when crouching based on the room you're in, not place in a given room just the room in general).
They obviously wanted to make this game accessible but if those few things were adjusted it would have been a much more fun experience. I personally played it with a friend who helped me by backseat gaming using the only existing FAQ, and it was allot of fun.

Honestly, this game could’ve had potential. I love all of the characters you interact with and the whimsical medieval aesthetic of this island that you save.

Honestly, I liked this game a lot as a kid. The visuals, the music (especially the music), the bizarre cutscenes, and even the opacity of the mechanics I kind of enjoyed; the unusual and seemingly illogical solutions to some of the problems that pop up were something that I was used to since I loved point-and-click adventure games. My little cousin would sit there and watch me play, she laughed so hard at the animated bits. Good stuff. You played right through it like a pro, btw. Thanks for the upload!
