Daddy cat knows that he had one kitten. But the mother cat adopted a kitten who was left without a mom. Mama cat brought dad cat to meet this kitten and explain to him who he is.

I bet the conversation between Mom and Dad was Mom said to Dad, "Honey, the human dropped off an orphan for us to raise so our child will have a sibling." and Dad said "AWW, poor baby. We will raise them as our own and tell them when they are older how they were adopted and loved just as much as if they were born to us.".

I had a similar experience, I rescued a male kitten from the local colony, then later a litter from the same colony, he was like "I swear I didn't do it, their not mine" but now the second cat from that litter I kept thinks of him like dad. The first one even breaks him out when I lock the catflap after the second one pulls a disappearing act. I just think back the line from archer "can he come out to play", cats are so cute and clever. We never stood a chance!
