This is so 90's Anime that it hurts. The nostalgia is literally ripping my flesh apart.

something in the heavy lines and use of colour in 90's anime just hit different. I was not aware anything beyond Pokemon existed as a kid, as such, once I learned there were so many other forms of anime out there, I realised I had an untapped gold mine of backlog anime to delight in. The point is, nostalgia is not a factor in my love of 90s anime, rather the aforementioned aesthetic choices, writing quality and tropes of the genre are the main things I love most in anime

That period between 1996-2001 was an awesome time for gaming and anime.

God this style of animation is so nostalgic. I would like it if hand drawn animation could come back, at least with more popular stuff like Berserk 2016.

More than 20 years ago since I first watched this as a kid, I’m still listening to this song till this day on my Spotify. Still can’t beat the original anime rendition.

Fun fact: the characters were designed by Kosuke Fujishima, a very big name in the anime industry who is known for some of the most amazing art styles around. At one point even Tite Kubo got involved in the development of one of the Sakura Wars console games.
Amazing art!

I just started to introduce to this franchise and I do not regret it.

Lovely characters designs and good Opening song.

Sakura Taisen was the one series I was ALWAYS curious about as a kid but never got the opportunity to play them.

The third girl was very prettily drawn. Short brown hair wearing violet kimono (I think). This was a childhood anime. I'm 30 now, and this is so nostalgic. 😅

Started playing yesterday after trying to find an undubbed version of Sakura Wars for Wii. Never played or seen in depth any of the games in the series before, so I didn't knew exactly what to expect and I loved what I got.

This game has the smell and taste of a 90s anime, with cartoonish villains, episode previews, catchy opening song and all.
They integrated the visual novel segments in a way that it doesn't brake the flow of the story: you can't save mid-game, only when the game lets you do so; and most choices you need to make are timed. This way you'll always read each segment of an episode in full (they aren't as big as most VNs, clocking in around 15 ~30 min each depending on your actions) and you always need to pay attention to the dialogue so you don't do a choice you don't want to. Some of these timers go by very fast, but I think it adds to the game's personality and consequences of your actions, by making you accept your choices, even if they aren't as you wanted, and maybe giving more reason to replay the game with those choices in mind.

The combat is also very dependant on these VN section, as the characters don't level up. Instead they get stronger or weaker depending on their mood, which changes depending on your interactions with them. And this seems like it goes on a episode-to-episode basis, as my Sakura was in High Spirits on episode 1, and even though my actions were more or less balanced in terms of keeping her mood high, she was "demoted" to Normal Spirits on ep 2. So you can't really grind affection, making the game always balanced, which I like, but I can see how it would be a turn-off for some that want to make an unbeatable unit, or freely customize their stats for different strategies.

I'm not very far into the game yet, but I really like it. If anyone is interested, I'd recommend trying out the English patched SEGA Saturn version in case you don't understand Japanese. The main theme is LIT.

the amount this art style beats the new 3d models cannot be understated.
