excellent, I recently bought a small 7 string bass viol 4 months ago, It is a chinese cheaply made instrument but makes quite a nice sound, I'm playing some dance movements from Benjamin Hely's book "the compleat Violist", and also a few movements from Marais''s fifth book. I am also borrowing a viennese violone to play around on. I get interesting reactions when I walk on to stage with 2 cellos, one obviously not a cello!

I just got my first viol last week. It was made in 2000 in germany, full size seven string. This will be my first string instrument.

Love your playing! Contrary to other commenters, I find the sound surprisingly nasal for such a big body of a viol. I recently made one much smaller and in the beginning it sounded the same. I was so sick of it that moved the sound post to every possible position near the orthodox spot. Only minor nuances. Then one day I just moved the sound post left from the bass bar, on the other side of the instrument. Suddenly the whole thing started to resonate magically all tones interconnected and resonant! The basses deep, the highs crystalline! Left the sound post there.

Where could I find a viol under $5000? Or even under $1500? So expensive! It can be plywood, I prefer the tone of ply in upright bass.

That’s a little bass viol… is it a Lyra viol?

I wish I could see your fingers and not just the bow...
