Life Chances: an expression of the likelihood, or probability, of having certain experiences in one's life time. An important concept in the study of inequality, social stratification, and demography. Related to the philosophy of science as it focuses on our ability, as social scientists, to predict the chances a person has of experiencing certain things in their lifetime. Life chances are not "set in stone" but fluctuate in relation to social-historical conditions. They are also be influenced by public policy and personal choice.
