Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem using similarity

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

I wish I had these lectures when I was in school. My maths scores would be completely different.

I had learned Pythagorean Theorem last year in middle school but no one teach me why a^2+b^2=c^2
yr teaching is easy to understand
thx a lot~!

And it seems in many schools, teachers suffice themselves with teaching you how to solve a problem without telling you why that works. And I personally believe retention is better attaned when one nows why something works just as much as when they learn how to do the something.

We're learning about geometry in class now, and we are at a sub-chapter about just this. I didn't understand it in class, but now i did! Thanks :D

Sal, when you were young did you figure this out for yourself? Because I was never able to figure this out, you just showed me. Thanks

Does anyone know why he split the triangle into three ? I understand the gist but don’t understand why he used cos aswell

We have to prove that except that we also have to prove the triangles similar.

how did you know to add a² = cd and b² = ce? adding those two equations seems totally arbitrary to me and i don't understand why.

why did you add a^2 = cd and b^2 = ce together?

At 8:50 mind=blown.... How come I didn't learn this in school? I mean we used pythagorean theorem, but we had no idea what it really was.

Because the 2 smaller similar triangles make up the big triangle
