The balisong actually didnt originate from martial arts, it was originally a farmers knife designed for easy use with one hand and compact size for fitting in pockets easily. It only really became a weapon out of necessity during a war that broke out and afterwards was when they really took off as a weapon. They were readily available, easy to hide and use, and usually well made given the stresses they were meant to endure as a tool.

I still don't understand why gravity knives are illegal, or why autos are illegal in many places, my Emerson wave karambit is faster than both and my spyderco can be opened faster than my autos, these laws only made sense way back in the day when pocket knives had no pocket clips and we're difficult and slow to open and close
