Land Rover Discovery 2018 SUV in-depth review | Mat Watson Reviews

Your eyes do not deceive you, it may look like an enlarged Discovery Sport but in fact, this is the all new Land Rover Discovery. This all new designed SUV features an updated interior, complete with wooden finish more reminiscent of Range Rover than Land Rover. However, has Land Rover managed to borrow from its cousin to compete with rivals such as the Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and Volvo XC90? Has it finally married luxury and practicality, that can compete in the rush of the school run, and navigate treacherous off road obstacles? Well never fear, my review covers both topics, minus the children as I show you exactly what this new Land Rover Discovery has to offer, in this in-depth video review.

I just borrowed one, I took three children my wife and dog down to Cornwall and back in total 800 miles covered in 4 days, absolute comfort, 40mpg, not a moan from kids with entertainment and sitting high enough to avoid motion sickness, it's not as sporty as my X5 but for family and outdoor activities I can't begin to recommend this enough....fantastic

At first I didn’t quite like the back but now, it seems I appreciate it by having a unique look that not all cars have.

The rear seat electrical buttons assembly looked really flimsy. The plastic moved a lot when he pressed the buttons.

Owning a JLR vehicle these days is a great experience these days. The after sales is great, the service, the dealers, and heck even the reliability, touch wood, having owned one, is great. Now I don't completely do that car justice, but heavy green laning, highway drives and city drives alike have been a breeze!
As far as this particular series is concerned, I'm neither a fan of the way this looks, nor the Velar to be honest, though the velar has phenomenal interiors, I prefer the classic, bigger and boxier nature of the classic range rover personally, but what a brilliant family car this New Discovery would make! Heck, even the discovery sport, is a great buy I feel.
Great review as always, thx for all your great content !

Its a brilliant SUV, very practical and useful but that back end is just downright hideous. Whoever thought of that offset number plate was high af. I would go and buy the XC90. Just as practical but miles better looking.

I call head 2 head between this, the Q7 and the XC90

Too many incidents of crankshafts breaking and engine blocks cracking. Basic, basic failures, but people are more concerned about all the stereo, heated cup holders.

Congrats Mat, I've enjoyed Matt Prior and Sean Carson's reviews of the new Disco, but after watching your review I now feel as though we've actually spent some real practical time with this thing, so big thanks!
I can't believe just how much ill-informed drivel has been published since last year about the 2017 Disco by obviously under-prepared or confused so-called motor writers, but you've got it down big time, thank feck.
It'll be available in July here in Australia, and might just replace the old Kombi in our family, unless the 700nm RR Sport temps me away.. And yes, we'll be needing those off-road chops around our home here in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
Thanks again, great work.
Bring it on.

Advice to Land Rover :
Replace the back with the old one & Increase the height of the rear seat .
This will make a perfect Discovery .
There, you have it . Saved you millions of $$$$ in market research and R&D .

Extremely thought out interior. Exterior... well... You don't really notice it when you are behind the steering wheel.

From some angles it's not bad but from others it looks like the designers lost the will to live

I was really impressed with it when I saw the pictures....and then I sat in one...the seconds row has the most uncomfortable seats of any luxury SUV....with the XC90 being the best followed by the Q70...its just that there is not enough cushioning in the bottom and the seat is too low so your feet are raised far too high...

Some facts that no-one in these car reviews EVER mention.
Compared to the previous model.
1) The load space is a lot SMALLER. With all seats folded it is 2400litres vs 2550 for the old model. This is because the floor to ceiling measures 10cm less; You could get a bike upright in the old one if you took off the front wheel; You CANT in this 2) The old one has five full size comfortable seats in rows 2 and 3 with good access to row 3. In order to be able to fold the seats flat with electric motors they have ruined the comfort. The seats are very thinly padded and set way too low so that for a 1m80 adult your knees are up by your ears and to give the illusion of leg room the seat squabs are 5cm shorter in the new model. They are NOT ADULT SEATS and terribly uncomfortable. They are suitable only for children 3) Access to row 3 is terrible compared to the old model 4) the middle seat on row 2 is not a proper seat unlike in the old model; It is as hard as a plank of wood and only suitable for short journeys. Comfort has been sacrificed to make it into a fold down armrest.
I regularly travel long distances with 5 or more adults in perfect comfort in my Disco 4. You couldn't in this car. It is designed and priced for wealthy people who live in urban environments who want to take the kids to school. Needless to say i won't be buying one.
The back end is also plug ugly btw
