Concepts: the Future of Design in Architecture and Education

The iPad changes everything. Follow Evan Bronstein, AIA, EDAC, LEED GA as he explores Concepts: Smarter Sketching, an iPad app that makes design accessible to everyone.

At the St. Louis Center of Creative Arts, Bronstein uses Concepts to teach 6-13 year olds the basics of design and architecture. He says "I can introduce the children to a very intuitive, tactile connection with design. They don’t have to learn any complex (or costly) program to begin striding down the path. In fact, many of them begin using [Concepts] before I can even provide them instruction."

In his architectural practice, Bronstein has designed many city landmarks, including residences, a hospital, portions of the St. Louis Zoo, and more using Concepts as his starting point. "Concepts allows me to take a rough sketch and develop it into a fine drawing that I can use in production. It has changed the process of design."

Concepts is an award winning sketching app made specifically for design professionals. Leading Architects, Industrial Designers and Illustrators use Concepts to iterate on ideas and to create high quality professional grade sketches.

Concepts is a raster + vector hybrid that lets you quickly manipulate and adjust any stroke at any time. The infinite canvas and infinite layers allow you to free sketch without having to plan out your work in advance. Precision tools - like flexible shape guides and auto-measurement - give your sketches the precision of AutoCAD(R) on your iPhone + iPad.

Just like many of the best design tools, Concepts has a bit of a learning curve. But we know that once you learn how to use it, you’ll see why top designers at Philips, Nike and Citrix have made sketching in Concepts a part of their normal workflow.

Concepts connects to real-world formats like AutoCAD DXF, Adobe Photoshop PSD, and web-standard SVG. You can bring your favorite stylus from Apple, Wacom, Adonit, and Pencil by FiftyThree. Concepts is currently available on iPad, iPad Pro and iPhone, but we are coming to other platforms soon!

Concepts is free to try and if you like it, you can upgrade to our ‘Pro Pack’ version (one-time, in-app purchase) to unlock those professional exports (PNG, SVG, DXF, PSD), get full use of the precision toolkit, advanced layer control and options for images and text.

I tried to put this in a Contact form, but it's not working.

This isn't so much a problem as an observation. Unlike most of your clientele, I use vector apps to create files to cut on electronic cutters. Sometimes I want a coloured image, sometimes not. However, what I find really useful in many apps, is the ability to set the drawing mode to a complete closed path, and that seems to be missing in Concepts. The ability to draw a random shape and have it auto close is invaluable. While if I at least have that, I can import an SVG into cut software to work on, (i.e., join, weld, intersect) it's a pain in the neck if paths are not already closed - and even with a stylus, closing paths can be tricky. The other thing we cutters like to have is a clear vector outline for groups of objects - but they rely on having closed paths to work on.  If you are wondering what I am talking about, I suggest that you look at some free software, Sure Cuts a Lot (demo version); Silhouette Studio (basic free version).
We cut anything from intricate paper cuts to simple appliqué, greeting cards to personalised packaging; scrapbooking etc. You would be surprised at what we can do given the right tools.
Have a look too at my craft blog, createinspain.blogspot.com.es to get an idea. If nothing else, looking at this type of software may give you valuable ideas on how to increase your customer base. I really wanted to like this app but it also relies too much on users having Adobe to link into and most hobbyists don't.

I NEED this app for my android devices

All I am asking is for the snap to grid tool. I am an Architecture student who cant afford an iPad as most of my money goes to other things like materials and other software I use for like rendering and such. This app will be amazing for most students if that snap to grid option was more readily available. The windows app sketch book has something similar but offers 2 point to 3 point perspective and its free and it snaps to grid. I subscribed to pro first on android and it didn't offer that. I tried to link that the app on my windows computer to see if the snap to grid option was offered there. I had to cancel the android subscription and get a new subscription on my computer. Still no snap to grid tool. If you ask me I feel like maybe you shouldn't offer this app on windows or android without including that snap to grid tool which allows for those straight lines; because it just makes us feel like you are shitting on us and calling it fudge. Its very insensitive of you to assume most architecture students can afford an iPad. All you tutorial videos are in IOS non in windows not even with a Wacom pad which a lot of us use with our laptops. Good job so far, but do better.

Hi! I am starting a youtube channel. Can you give me some advise where to get music that I will not get into trouble with for "commercial use" later ? Thank you! ( as far as I understood it you have to buy a track and then can use whatever you want for it. ) Is there a way how to get free music ?
