Pierre Seners, MD, PhD, Rothschild Foundation Hospital, Paris, France, explains the mismatch concept in acute stroke. Ischemic tissue can be divided into two compartments: the core and the penumbra. The ischemic core is irreversibly injured tissue due to inadequate cerebral blood flow. Surrounding this is the penumbra: severely hypo-perfused tissue at risk of progressing to infarction without reperfusion. The volumetric difference between these compartments is known as mismatch. MR and CT perfusion imaging can be used to visualize these compartments, which have a significant impact on clinical decision making and treatment outcomes. This interview took place at European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022 in Lyon, France.
