I wasn't expecting such experimental editing in a movie from the 50's

I saw this for the first time on TV in the middle 1960s and I was really impressed with the short segment that looked like advertising, with the woman getting out of the Imperial limo and the shampoo and toothpaste. It was really unusual in a Hollywood film, even 8 or so years after "Funny Face" was made. And this particular posting of this song is so sharp and with such good color, that really enhances the effect.

I watched this movie with mom recently and she asked, "Who is that woman and why haven't I ever heard of her before?" I had to tell her she only made a few movies and was more famous as an author and nightclub performer. Mom was wishing she'd done more films, she obviously has presence and talent. Oh well, it only makes this movie more precious.

My grandmother doesn’t know how to rent/buy movies online, so I invited her over to watch this movie with me. She was telling me all about how she saw this movie when it came out hahah

I wear all black every day all year round like I was going to a funeral all the time, but walk into my bedroom and it’s pinker than this entire video. I don’t wear pink but I LIVE pink.

You cut off the punch line, where Kay Thompson replies that she wouldn't be caught dead wearing pink. It is the culmination of the whole number, you know?

Honestly, the first time I saw this was in a college course when the professor was talking about fashion and trends in the '50s, especially how a lot of '50s magazine ads were showing pink stuff including appliances. I thank that class for getting me to fall in love with "Funny Face".

Kay Thompson doing Diana Vreeland...wonderful. Judy Garland BTW adored Kay Thompson who was one of the wittiest people she knew.

I must say I was impressed that back then this all looked so modern and fresh.

"Funny Face" was dubbed by someone as "the best MGM musical not made by MGM." Indeed. Paramount made this film, but it borrowed usual MGM stalwarts like musical director Adolph Deutch and orchestrators Conrad Salinger and Skip Martin from Metro to make it SEEM like an Arthur Freed production.
