I find it difficult to believe that ABRSM grade 5 holders and above can’t read music, because you have to pass a separate theory exam with ABRSM to progress past grade 5, (which is why so many then switch to the exams offered by Trinity which do not require this). You need to read music to pass this theory exam, and you study from a separate workbook for this, of which there is one for each grade. I can see that that the new online ‘performance’ exams available since Covid - where you only have to send a video of you playing 4 pieces at that grade level - can be memorised and that that will get you through - which is a concern. In fact you can see this in piano exams in the videos - those who have learnt the pieces look down at their fingers on the keys. Those who are sight reading look up at the music, not at the keys, as their fingers move. However I still choose the traditional ’practical’ exams for my piano grades. These are still available. They are - as in the past - face to face, and include not only playing the three ‘grade’ prepared pieces, but also include sight reading, where you play from an unseen piece of music; scales; and aural work. I passed my grade 2 piano with ABRSM last week. It was terrifying if I’m honest, and it’s very tempting to switch to the video route by taking the ‘Performance’ exam, especially as I struggle to remember the scales. Nevertheless I will continue with the original ABRSM Practical exam route, as clearly it shows a more rounded and deeper level of knowledge.

Would you know if ABRSM has a list of certified/approved teachers in India? I am planning to learn piano. And I am trying to decide between Trinity and ABRSM. I’m in Mumbai. Thanks.

In simple language, For instance, i have studied suzuki violin method, from volume 1 - 6, but i still can`t get it with the ABRSM system, i can only happen to find ABRSM Discover music theory books and ABRSM exam books, is there no syllabus like the suzuki method or is ABRSM more of a person being taught how to prepare for the exams using the DMT books and the ABRSM exam pieces
