One of my favorite guitar solos. Elliot Easton is a criminally underrated guitarist.

The headless bass gained a lot of popularity in the 80s. It still has to be tuned, but the tuning knobs are on the body of the guitar instead of the end of the neck

Lol! The proper way of dancing to new wave/punk. Alt rock. The pogo (move and hump up and down) at the clubs, school dances, and concerts ! The Cars and Talking Heads were both fun and quirky. Heavy on the synths. New wave/punk bands of the late '70s and '80s. Check out B-52 and DEVO too. . Influenced many at rock bands that would come around later during the '90s and '00s. The Cars definitely influenced bands like Weezer (The Cars worked with them in their early albums), The Killers, No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, etc.

Great memories. This was the 1st Cars song I ever heard. I didn't listen to Rock at the time, but this song was one of my intros into the genre that I love now. My favorite from them is "You're all I got tonight." Elliot Easton is a criminally underrated guitarist. Rest peacefully Ben and Ric.

The 'headless' bass is a Steinberger that was popular in the 80s. The tuners are at the bottom of the body at the other end of the strings. Other brands still make similar designs.

since you did "Drive, " Heartbeat City for ballads...for more typical rock/new wave fusion from the Cars you have to hear, "Let's Go" or "Since You're Gone" and "Moving in Stereo."

This Summer: turned 20 ... for the 3rd time.
The Cars remind me of the 1st time.
Glad that you two enjoy all this old stuff!

The late Ric Ocasek (Oh-kay-zick) was the iconic lead singer of the Cars.

This is SUCH an early 80s song! It’s one we would have heard often in video arcades, playing Asteroids or Galaga or Pac-Man while walking around in our Jordache jeans and Members Only jackets. It was a very popular song.

Guitars without a headstock are known as headless guitars. Headless guitars have the tuning mechanism incorporated into the bridge, and tuning adjustments are carried out from there. Back then it was a fairly cutting edge design but today it’s not uncommon. Several manufacturers make headless guitars.

A friend of mine was in a band that had rehearsal space in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was just down the hall from where The Cars rehearsed. One day they ran into a couple of the guys from The Cars (can't remember who) and they played a new song they were working on called "Cocktail Shaker". They had sounds in it like a blender and an ice maker etc. A couple months later The Cars released "Shake it up".

Headless guitars and basses came about in the 1980s. It was started by Steinberger. They designed a bass bridge and guitar bridge that could be tuned from the opposite end. No head needed. They did require special strings with a ball at both ends. Normally it's only one end. Other manufacturers came out with their own. Most did not require the special strings. But yes, you do have to tune them. It's done with a thumb screw on the bridge.

"Heartbeat City", and "Drive" are a different vibe from The Cars 💕

The Cars had two lead singers. Rick Ocasek and Benjamin Orr (Orr also was their bassist). Of the reactions you've done, Orr sang lead on "Drive" and "Just what I needed".

This guitar solo is fire. Also Elliot Easton shines in "Tonight She Comes". It's SO good.

My favorite Cars tune is Bye Bye Love with bass player Benjamin Orr on vocals.

Just a quick answer. The "headless guitars" became popular in the 80s because they were so different looking and exotic. Yes, you can still tune them from the back of the bridge. There were turning screws/mechanisms, depending on manufacturer, that you could use your index finger/thumb with to tune them. So, basically, instead of the strings being locked down at the bridge and tuned at the head, they were locked down at the top of the neck and tuned at the bridge.

Quintessential New Wave. It’s one of my favorite bands. Have you done Moving in Stereo? That’s my favorite.

Those guitars are "headless guitars." They don't have a headstock. They are still tuned, the tuners are just on the other end. They were popular in the 80s in New Wave and ironically coming back in style.

This was a fun song when it came out. I agree with Jordan. “Just What I Needed” is my favorite by them.
