Yes Mudpuppies and salamanders are a sign of great water quality! Because their skin is permeable any pollutants or other bad stuff in the water can be absorbed by their skin. So your pond that can never hold water is a very healthy ecosystem!

I had no idea until today that axolotl and mudpuppies are distinct species. They're both aquatic salamanders, but one is native to Mexico and the other to the eastern U.S.

An interesting fact about that cute 😊 little creature, is that in running water, where there is more oxygen, it will have smaller gills.
In stagnant water, it will grow larger ones, to be able to take in more oxygen. 🦎

Mudpuppies are super cool! I just learned about them this year, I found one wrapped up in fishing line in my local river and had to do some research to figure out what it was. I didn’t even know we had big salamanders in Iowa, but was glad to learn they’re a sign of good water quality.
