The Big Picture - Hazardous Delhi

Air pollution in Delhi continued to worsen, causing serious health concerns among residents even as weather officials warned of further worsening of air quality in the coming days. On 5 November, the levels of particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 in the National Capital spiked to ‘hazardous’, leaving Delhiites gasping for breath. Particulate matter is a complex mixture that may contain soot, smoke, metals, nitrates, sulfates, dust, water and tire rubber. Fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5, can enter the lungs and bloodstream. High levels of air pollution can cause a range of health problems, including respiratory ailments, cardiovascular diseases, adverse pregnancy outcomes and even death.

Health being the fundamental right of citizens under Article 21 and Air Pollution is main cause of death of 5 lakh children in one year and cardiovascular, lung diseases are manily coming from Air Pollution and in that reference manufacturing industry and vehicular emissions are mainly contributor of Air Pollution in Delhi with local weather conditions adding fuel to fire. There has be overall collaboration among governments and different agencies working towards environmental betterment. Indian government is pushing Ujjawala scheme to spread LPG, enhancing use of electric vehicles and digital India are some of the remarkable steps if these can be implemented properly India can see a huge change with that citizens should themselves be aware and take action in the betterment of environment going forward.

Come Oct., the smog starts visiting the NCT, Delhi and the phenomenon continuing intermittently till Jan.
This has become a perennial problem and the worst sufferers are the people of NCT.
The various cause attributed to the rise in smog over the years and the remedies suggested thereon by the panelist need addition by a few points. I would add as under-
Apart from the pollution emanating from the various factories and industries and ever growing construction activities, the panelists dwelling on the points the stubble burning aggravating to the problem and adding to the intensity and volume of smog cannot be ignored.
The four months, Oct, Nov, Dec and Jan being the harvesting months for the Kharif crops which has maximum cultivation of paddy gives rise to accumulation of straw over the period of time necessitating disposal for advantageous purpose.
The NCT, Delhi is surrounded by the states like, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh where paddy are grown on large scale and the farmers disposing off the straw putting the heap to fire.
The NCT being in the vicinity to these states the smoke travel reaching NCT and the process of burning stubble continues till Jan to get rid of cold waves blowing across the country.
Thus, the management with regard to disposal of stubble assumes wide significance to get rid of this problem, suggestions are-
The northern states reel under frequent spell of floods and drought and also accounting maximum rearing of cattle.
These cattle often die starving during the flood and draught for want of proper feed.
The rice straw can find maximum application during such calamities to feed the cattle.
The cottage industries can also find a varied use in promoting the use of mat in the rural areas.
Thirdly, the straw can be decomposed in the pit and manure prepared of it.
As the applicability of straw cannot be overlooked, there is need to develop an efficient management system requiring formulation of policy to streamline the need of growers and consumers and to put an end to stubble burning.
