Nikon Coolpix P520 zoom test.

Just a quick test of new camera when at work. Image would, I'm sure, be sharper if on a tripod and not with me hanging out of a 10th floor balcony but nevermind. Crystal Palace TV transmitter to West Croydon/ Addiscombe in seconds and finish up with a view of 'The Shard' in central London, many miles away. It impressed me! :-) As I say, probably would've focused better on tripod but bloody good!

Yes, ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed, Manual control, exposure, auto bracketing, etc and Programmable settings plus the usual pre-sets.

There is now available, and adapter that clips on like a lens cap, as the camera doesn't support filters. This now allows you to use filters. I'm hoping that a UV filter will reduce some of the 'heat wobble' at long range and clean up those shots. I've got a stack of filters but not received the adapter yet (any day now)

I did some youtube research as not familiar with the Canon SX50. The SX50 is 12MP whereas the P520 is 18MP. There's 24-1200mm zoom on SX50 and 24-1000mm on P520. The hotshoe on the SX50 would be handy and it also shoots in RAW which the P520 doesn't have. I'm amateur and happy with the P520. The zoom is big enough, other than messing around with HDR, I don't often alter photos (so I have no need for RAW) and I like having the extra pixels and bigger screen. This is a personal thing though :)

It has a built in microphone. You can hear the crossing beeping on the street below in the video.

Full manual control through dial wheels at the back. Focus took a bit of getting used to as used to twisting end of lens but all controls are there: ISO, shutter speed, aperture, exposure, etc.

Hi Nick. I have this camera at home, but I really don´t know how to reach as good zoom performance as is shown in your video. Could you please describe me how to set all the parameters to zoom so far. I mean settings of mode, focusing zooming and so on...In my case I can zoom approximately 60% of your zoom test video.Thanks for answering.

I just used the usual zoom lever. There is a 'power bar' that appears at the top left of the screen/ view finder. This goes to about 3/4s, after that it's digital zoom. Have a look on the menu and settings (the spanner at the bottom) make sure that your digital zoom is turned on, that could be the problem? Good luck and have fun :-)

Yeah, just plug the lead in. That's how I did this one. I'm using Windows 7 :-) There is a wifi attachment available too but I don't have that (I don't really see the point as I'll generally be at home by the computer to upload anyway.

The autofocus isn't the quickest I've used but on a hot day like that and particularly over such long range, 'heat wobble' is inevitable.

I've had no problem with it. I've been out, taken over 200 shots and the battery meter didn't move. It getting a charge when you plug it into the USB, so regularly topped up at the end of the day.

Hey man, would you say this is good for the first pro type of camera that i am going to get, do you think this would be good to start off with, i used it in college as part of Still image stuff, but never really got to spend alot of time with it :)
