It's more difficult to go from real life to a sim than a sim to real life. Because you actually lose a lot of sensations you rely on in the real world. That seat of the pants feel for example is essential to doing well in the real world.

Shows how much he drives on instinct. The feel of the seat vibrating, air movements, and g-forces become an experienced driver's vision. Simple visuals and force feedback are generally used more by less experienced drivers - so when that's all gone and you're just looking at a screen, I'm not surprised he didn't do too well.
