The Saab 35 fighter aircraft started being planned as a replacement for the J 29 Tunnan in the autumn of 1949 under the leadership of Erik Bratt. The Swedish defence materiel procurement authority required the aircraft to perform at high supersonic speeds and be able to engage targets at high altitudes.

My father constructed the engine installment in J35. He managed to design an installment that allowed the entire engine to be connected via just a few bayonette attachments where three were responsible for fuel, avionics and electronics. That allowed the entire engine to be exchanged in just a few minutes. That might sound easy, but in reality exhaustingly difficult to design taking into consideration the temperature differences and stress on the engine itself. That was his proudest moment as an engineer...
What an achievement it was. It's never been done since.

I still say the Draken, Grippen and Viggen are/were some of the most underrated fighters out there, specially the current Gripen.

The English dubbing over the Swedish ground control reminds me of old Japanese monster was an incredible aircraft, just behind the F-104 and F-106 in my heart. As the Swedes would say, Draken är häftigt!

randomly got this recommended, don’t regret. love the way it was filmed for it’s time, especially second half, feels like christopher nolan level of suspense buildup

All they need was a 10-second narration that says: "is this just not the most aesthetic thing you've ever seen fly"

60 years later and she still looks out of this world. And still beautiful.

Saab and Sweden should be proud of their technology. The Draken still looks modern now.

Love this plane. Jets of the 1950's (and 60's) were so beautiful and/or charismatic, not like the ones today. And gotta love that turbojet howl! Saab Draken, EE Lightning, F-104 Starfighter, Mirage III (and F-5), Hawker Hunter, F-100 Super Sabre, F-101 Voodoo, MiG-21, B-58 Hustler, Avro Vulcan, Myasishchev M-4, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Superfortress, MiG-15, F-86 Sabre, F9F Panther, and others. Lovely A/C.

There has never been an aircraft which in my opinion looks as futuristic as the draken, truly not just a marvel of engineering but a work of art too

Hard to believe it is a late 1940's design. Fast, reliable, easy to work on, good looking, perfect size. Saab certainly knew their stuff.

That was a good ad. Makes me want to buy a Draken.

The Swedish are so efficient, testing new equipment on tried and tested airframes so as to only test one component relating to the overall final design at a time. Doing so makes improvements much cheaper and easier

15 years later and the algorithm shows me this. Thanks YouTube.

Drakens are still flown at air shows. They are a testament to the skill of the saab engineers who designed this plane.
