Pharma companies have used patents to profiteer during public health crises. Today, they have locked up vaccine formulas - driving up prices.

Without patents, there isn't going to be a lot of innovation. A patent is a reward for hard work for many. The best way to deal with something like this is to buy out patents and make them open-source. The other way is to get a law that patents can't be enforceable during epidemics and pandemics. Another argument is that if the design is made open source, many companies will try to manufacture it without quality control and ruin the trust in the medicine/vaccine.

I don't know why we need to worry about big pharma and its synthetically derived medicines. If only India started to focus on its resources natural based on Ayurveda and patent all ayurvedic medicines. The next big thing in the world is eco living. Let the western world focus on fast relief medicines with so many side effects.

Palki is once again wrong, on all counts, with regards to how patents work. She needs to further research and report(for correcting misinformation) the true cost of what it takes to patent a drug and why it takes so many years to recover true cost of producing a drug. For countries without extensive portfolio of patents, it’s natural to asks for it, for free, that’s understandable. At least India begs for it, to be free. Unlike China, they outright just steals it.

There’s a reason why Biden administration is buying vaccines in advance, because vaccines are only effective for approximately 6 months. In addition, covid virus is constantly mutating, which requires the latest vaccine to suppress the latest mutation. Now, if Palki knows simple math, 2 shots, 2x a year, for +325 million Americans, she should easily see why our orders are so much . . . . I guess not 5:09. I’m starting to question Palki’s credential as a journalist . . . hmmm.
