Men having unfettered access to young children is a nefarious fact of history, not an innocent one. People refused to confront the issue of child sexual abuse due to societal structure, the church, beliefs that the children had somehow asked for it, and that a child who had been abused was no longer clean and able to come to marriage as a virgin. It has only very recently become ok to call out abusers and seek therapy and respite for victims. We won't ever know about Carroll but the idea that "things were different and innocent back then" is a dangerous rewriting of history.
