U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine General James Mattis to be his secretary of defense.
He made the announcement at a rally in Cincinnati Thursday night, saying "we're not announcing it until Monday."
The retired four-star general, whose nicknames include "Mad Dog" and the "Warrior Monk," has served over four decades in the Marine Corps and is lauded as one of the most influential military leaders of his generation.
For Mattis to take the job, Congress will need to pass new legislation to bypass a federal law stating that defense secretaries must not have been on active duty in the previous seven years.
General Mattis would be the second retired general to serve as defense secretary,…the first being George C. Marshall in the early 1950s.
