The following are a few co-parenting guidelines for divorced parents:

Develop a workable plan that gives children access to both parents. We've said this many times please do not use your child as a pawn. Of course there are cases where contact and access should be limited or monitored, in most cases it is not, so let your child enjoy both parents.

Keep ongoing contact with the children, so they don't feel rejected or abandoned. If you make plans with your child, you need to keep them. Making plans and then cancelling them repeatedly will make a child internalize all sorts of feelings to justify why you are not following through with plans made.

Maintain contact with the children by using and providing access to communication. When appropriate having a "how was your day call?" or a short "good night" call can be helpful to maintain contact.

Provide access to both parents and grandparents. Set appropriate times to let your child speak with the other parent and grandparents.

Be home to receive children on time. If you are not able to receive them personally you should make arrangements to have trusted third parties or grandparents help out when they can.

Call the other parent if you are going to be late for the exchange or activities. It's common courtesy to let the other party know as soon as you can if you will be late, so they can make appropriate schedule changes.

Keep parental communication lines open to constructively resolve problems concerning the children. Your priorities are to continue to parent your children as they grow. Having the other parent as an ally can be very helpful during school issues or persona issues your child may be going through.

Each parent should establish a home for the children with a place for their own personal belongings, such as clothing, books, toys, etc. It's important for a child to have their own space to make it feel like "home" no matter where they are with each parent.

These are a few helpful guidelines to make co-parenting for divorced parents a positive experience for all involved. If you keep in mind that children need love, attention and stability to thrive you can co-parent effectively and your children will thank you for it.
