Shang Chi grew up becoming like his father to be a ruthless killer, but his mother's heart lives within him and chose to live a different life. Shang Chi has his father's strength and his mother's love, the best quality from both his parents.

To all those who say Wenwu is a bad father, that is true but you would have to remember that Wenwu is literally 1000s of years old, that means that his view of valor is different from the modern one. During his time it was the duty of the man to take care of the woman, it did not matter if the man is but a 6 year old boy, he was still male and so failed in his duty. You could see that he was struggling to come to terms with that. He understood that his son was afraid and so he trained him and tried to beat that cowardice out of him, to make him strong, only for him to end up running away. This enforced his belief that Shang-Chi was a coward. His ancient sense of morals contrasted with the modern society. He thought he was being a good father, because that was what being a father is to him. He was a warrior and wanted to see his son become one too. In fact if you were to ask his contemporaries, they would say that he was actually lax in educating his children. There is a difference in culture that we need to understand.
