Rastan (Sega Master System) - Zilog and Moto #75

Hi everyone, this week on Zilog and Moto, I'm getting my inner barbarian on, and hacking and slashing all kinds of fantastic enemies...while apparently having the coordination of a drunk mule. Seriously, it's been awhile since I've had this many problems jumping in a platformer, but that's some of the "charm" of an 8 bit title, right? Bleh.

Anyway, Rastan is a port of the arcade title Rastan Saga from Taito, and is a rare US Master System release from a third party. Thankfully, someone besides Activision decided to support the console despite Nintendo's licensing shenanigans. However, the question remains, is it any good? Well, take a look to find out!

Fun fact: If this was released today, it would get an Adults Only rating due to the monster titties in the manual. As for the game itself, I actually like this port better than the arcade version. I think the difficulty has been scaled down to a more appropriate level with the stage hazards no longer being instant-kill, and the stage lengths shortened to reduce tedium. In addition, you get one extra stage/boss. Yes, the platforming is a little wonky, but isn't a problem once you get good at managing his physics.

Many of the traps on this version are more forgiving than the arcade and MS-DOS ports. Here, if you step in the water you take damage. In those other versions, if you touch the water its instant death.

I played Rastan on a coin-op on a cross-Channel ferry. It looks OK... but considering the Master System could also play Sonic 2, Populous, Lemmings, Alien 3 and Desert Strike...

This is a great port of Rastan. I always loved this game, even though, in hindsight....it was pretty meh. I think I just LOVED Conan the barbarian so much.
