Insect bites and stings occur when an insect is agitated and seeks to defend itself through its natural defense mechanisms, or when an insect seeks to feed off the bitten person. Some insects inject formic acid, which can cause an immediate skin reaction often resulting in redness and swelling in the injured area. Stings from fire ants, bees, wasps and hornets are usually painful, and may stimulate a dangerous allergic reaction called anaphylaxis for at-risk patients, and some wasps can also have a powerful bite along with a sting. Bites from mosquitoes and fleas are more likely to cause itching than pain.

The skin reaction to insect bites and stings usually lasts for up to a few days. However, in some cases, the local reaction can last for up to two years. These bites are sometimes misdiagnosed as other types of benign or cancerous lesions.[1] Signs and symptoms
The left side of the image is showing the temperature increase caused by an insect bite after about 28 hours.
Low-magnification micrograph showing wedge-shaped perivascular inflammation (superficial dermal perivascular lymphoeosinophilic infiltrate), the histomorphologic appearance of an insect bite (H&E stain).

The reaction to a sting is of three types. The normal reaction involves the area around the bite with redness, itchiness, and pain. A large local reaction occurs when the area of swelling is greater than 5 centimetres (2 in). Systemic reactions are when symptoms occur in areas besides that of the bites.[2]

With insect stings a large local reaction may occur (an area of skin redness greater than 10 centimetres (4 in) in size).[3] It can last one to two days.[3] It occurs in about 10% of those bitten.[4]

Was stung multiple times earlier today by either 1 or 3 separate yellow jackets while walking on my deck with a stepladder. They got my hands and lower leg. 12 hrs later and my hand is still throbbing. Feels like its still stinging me.

They made a hive under our deck and I wasn't planning on hurting or evicting them. But after the attack, I got me a pair of pliers and a blowtorch....I got medieval on they asses. You hear me Hillbilly Boy!?!??! 🔥

Note to self: don't leave piles of leaves unattended to decompose and then try to scoop them up in the late summer. It's not clever. You are given a pass this time because you just moved from California to Oregon and you didn't know that yellowjackets love this climate and nest in decomposing leaves. Instead, pick up those leaves and dispose of them immediately next time. Your future self will appreciate it. Trust me. Signed, self that just got stung 10 or more times while scooping a pile of decomposed leaves.

I was doing yard work at a friend's place. I must've mowed over it 4 times. When i went to rake up the trimmings, I was ok. Went to get the edges.... oh, oh, was I not okay! 7 stings in various spots. Could've been way worse. Better me than her younger son.

I got stuck by a swarm of yellow jackets working in my yard. They got in my hair and stung my scalp plus my wrist and legs. My friend sprayed me down with the hose to get them off me, but had to brush them out of my hair. It was horrible!! Today is the second day and the stings (total of 7) are redder super hot to the touch.

Been digging with a needle and tweezers to find the stinger. Can't find it at all. I have a little hole from digging. Should I just skip to the next step?

I was on a school trip and one person stepped on a yellow jacket hive. A bunch of kids(including me) got attacked my them. I got stung on my left elbow and it hurt so bad. This was a couple days ago too, I just got home. My arm is swollen, red, and very itchy. I got more of a reaction than other kids did. I took some medicine and it helped a lot. It was the worst day of my life because I fell soon after and had nausea, dizziness, and I felt so tired. I also had a really bad headache afterwards. I kept going to the nurse for ice but it didn’t really help. I hope the other kids are getting better but, I was traumatized 😅

I learned the difference between the two thanks to Coyote. Yesterday at the gas station, a western yellow jacket was in my pocket next to my phone. I was going to get the phone when suddenly it stung the left side of my right hand. I flinched and moved my hand, I was confused about the shock and looked over at the wasp. I was confused how a wasp got into my pocket, my dad grabbed his beanie and killed it. I was just surprised about how situation and started laughing, I had to rub some balm on it. It’s still kinda swollen right now, but I’m alright.

Yellow Jackets look nothing like bumble bees. And they move entirely differently. Yellowjackets are stealthy. You may only feel the sting without seeing them at all. Yellowjackets LOVE me! I will be with a group and I am the one they are attracted to. They evidently think I'm a sweet guy! I've been stung numerous times always on the hand after which my whole arm will swell up. I keep an epi pen around even though it is said to be a local reaction and there are no respiratory symptoms. This season I've been stung two times by Bumble bees. Bees are not nearly as aggressive as Yellow Jackets. The sting sites were on my hand and foot. Vey mild compared to the nasty Yellow Jacket and minimal swelling. If I had to choose..
