Do You Understand VSync?

Do you understand VSync in Star Citizen? In this video I do some performance testing to show how VSync works, how it eliminates screen tearing. But you do add input lag, so other solutions like fast sync, GSync and FreeSync will be better!

With G-sync (and some Freesync monitor) you also have a feature who are really helpful in Star Citizen : LFC or Low Frame Compensation. When you are below the minimum refresh rate of the monitor (like 40 hz), the monitor is going to display the same frame x2 or x3. For example, of your game run at 30 fps, the monitor do 30x2 and refresh at 60 hz. It's not the same smoothness than real 60 hz (and the input stay at the same frametime, so you'll have 33 ms instead of 16 ms) but it help a lot and you don't experience stutters or screen tearing.

And don't forget to set fps cap with your GPU driver or RTSS. If your screen have a max refresh rate of 144, cap it few frames below, like 140.

Want to chime in with some good info; when using G-Sync, remember that V-Sync is required to be turned on for the variable refresh rate tech to work properly.

However; enabling it in-game is often a detriment because games will often include other "optimizations" such as forced triple buffering to ensure a completely stable image. This is another massive hit to input latency and system latency. Therefore, always enable V-Sync at the driver level, meaning the graphics card's control panel, like the Nvidia Control Panel (NVCP) and not in-game. This also goes for Star Citizen.

Quick optimal settings:
G-sync on in the NVCP
V-Sync on in the NVCP
Cap frames 3-5 fps under max monitor refresh using RTSS (Rivatuner Statistics Server) for the best, most stable frametimes.

Always nice to see these videos man, you convey the info in an easily understandable way with visuals that back it up.

Keep it up 👍👍

Very nice and educational :) Would be great to hear on the subject of memory frequency at some point too

Okay, this is the second video that YouTube has served up to me for optimizing my video settings for SC. Thanks again, TP42! o7 🖖

Really great video! I've got a 32" monitor that I've got for cheap, but I definitely got some screen tearing. This is definitely one of the best explanations of Vsync and Gsync I've heard! Keep up the great videos!

Thank you for this video! I’ve always been curious about this feature in regards to SC! Cheers M8

This was very informative, and very clear. Thank you!

I've been using Fast Vsync setting in global settings in the nvidia control panel and turning off Vsync in all my games. Works great.

Thought I understood VSync, watched the video, realized I didn't understand VSync at all, watched the video again, now I understand VSync. Thanks! *Chef kiss*

Just one thing to throw in here, remember to turn any kind of sync (V, G, Free) when running a benchmark 🤠

Thank you for this. Actually dealing with this today. Really helped. Enhanced sync is the AMD version of advanced vsync.

I was watching a YouTube SC video plagued by horrendous screen tearing the other day. It's impossible to ignore. Same when people have motion smear turned on while using a low-spec computer. It looks absolutely ghastly

Nice video. Two things I was looking for info on:
1. What's the difference between Vsync enabled in-game vs enabling it on the back end i.e. in nVidia Control Panel?
2. Why is it that I've seen different/inconsistent results with the Vsync toggled and I've even been told to enable it in nVidia CP while leaving it disabled in game settings?

Thank you!! This really helped me understand the mysterious V-Sync toggle. I always run SC with v-sync off and I have a 100 MHz monitor. I don't notice any screen tearing ... maybe I just am blissfully unaware :D

As always, great vid. Love the toggle on/off comparison. Have you heard of SC having issues with fast refresh rate monitors? I was told to lock my monitor to 60fps to avoid crashes. (Source WWW).

0:48 maan that demo is crazy misleading. that G-Sync frame runs with a way higher framerate. Nvidia marketing at its best :o

On the Acer predator x34 IPS version. Gsync 😍

I use Fast sync to get rid of screen tear

A lot of SC can run in the 40-50 FPS range on medium computers or during more combat... I find this is where gsync really shines. 30 FPS honestly looks pretty bad and a screen tearing 50 fps looks bad. Also totally recommend gsync/freesync. Just look out as there are lots of levels of gsync and freesync.

Hi tenpound, thanks for the content. Im looking at getting up and running in SC and (here's a new challenge for you) I would like to know what the minimum internet bandwith you would reccomend for playing SC. Here in New Zealand we can get fibre but its very expensive, however unlimited broadband over cellular is cheap with optipns of speed caps at 5mb/s 10mb/ and 20mb/s so my question is what would be the minimum mbegabits per second would result in a minimum reasonable gameplay or would I definately need fibre? Thanks
