The excerpt from Mayo’s article, “Economy Plus Size”, describes how the Civilian American and European Surface Anthropometry Resource Project (Caesar) has devoted its time and energy to investigate gender differences in hip width as it presents complications for airline accommodations for men and women. After measuring over 4, 000 Americans and Europeans, the Caesar project concluded the following: “the hip breadth of men in the 95th percentile of the population, i.e. on the very big side, measured 17.6”. Given that the Boeing’s 757 standard seat width measures is 17 inches, the project infers that 95% of all men can fit into the standard Airbus seat. Naturally women differ physiologically and anatomically from men, especially with regard to their pelvic regions, and therefore recorded different measurements. With respect to women, the Caesar project concluded the following: “the hip breadth of women in the 90th percentile is 19.2 inches, and those in the 95th percentile have hips measuring 22.4 inches”. This data presents rather small statistical deviations between men and women hip breadth. But given that Boeing’s 757 standard seat is 17 inches and Airbus’ standard seat is 18 inches, this small statistical deviation has profound implications for airline accommodations for men and women. The legal/ethical challenge present itself in the current lack of regulations in the U.S. and the way certain airlines have failed to address the situation tactfully.
