Best Way To Install A Valve Box On A Sprinkler System

Installing a sprinkler control valve box is an important part of installing an irrigation system. Here is the best way to install a valve box for an irrigation system.

In this video I talk about the best way to install valve boxes over valves. There is two reasons I like to use two valve boxes. 1. The first box I can put all the way down around the valve to keep all the dirt out and from around the valve. It will make it easier to come back and work on the valve if needed. 2. The second box can be used for flexibility to go up or down so the top is level with the grade of the sod. This works better than just raising the one box up level with the grade and allowing dirt to cover the valve. This also works better that using and extension because you have a lot more flexibility and the cost is actually about the same.

The guy(s) who installed my irrigation needed to see this - they didn't, so it helped me instead 😁 Thank you!

Great idea. You can use the same size boxes but the top one, once you build up the ground around the bottom one, prevents the top one from sliding down over the bottom one and you don't have to by a very expensive extender box. Thank you.

Do you ever put gravel or stone down first or around the box?

Nice. I use plastic coffee cans for many things and get them from an AA mtg not far from home.
I cut the can(s) as needed to fit, sometimes folding it into a semblance of a flat "wall" using only one cut. They work well as corners. This is only as useful as the depth required to set the real valve box which the plastic pieces supplement, but they come in handy in a pinch along with some small pieces of masonry, cinder block or brickbat, and even wood, which can give stability, to a head or box, enough to get it set up in the right place. (The wood might disappear over time, but often the area, not being a mudhole, will be stable anyway with time.) I prefer a neat and accessible v box / valves and often will use a salvage v box which I can use instead of buying partials or complete new boxes, depending!! Sometimes one must go whole hog to do it properly. Coffee cans good for grease under the sink, misc screw/nail can, paint container(properly bagged, labelled, etc. don't be stupid), water bucket( for paint brush), etc.

Is there an email I can contact you at with some questions that I seem not to be able to find the exact answer to regarding designing and installing sprinkler systems? I think the questions I am wanting to ask may be important enough to cover in a video or two. I haven't seen any other sprinkler installer channel or any information on line with the information I seek anywhere it seems

For the smaller round boxes you can use perforated pipe and then just put a universal lid on it.

How do you reach it from the top with 2 boxes .. I mean I know the concept of what your explaining on how your saying with two boxes it should work but once all the dirt and grass is put back.. you wouldn’t be able to reach it from the very top to do any kind of maintenance?!..

I had to fix sunken valve boxes today. Unfortunately most irrigation contractors do not care. The cost of extra boxes is not something they want to pay for. Have you considered using self tapping screws when stacking to get it to the right height?

Just seems messy. Has to be a cleaner and more accessible system? Instead of dirt if you get leaks it fills with water you’re working in mud

Would be much more helpful if instead of pointing & talking if you had actually demonstrated what you are describing - never explain with words what can be shown by example. Makes things crystal clear for anyone of any language.

Thanks, put not descriptive enough. Recording with one hand and just talking does not describe the problem and solution clearly.
