I knew the fix was in when he pulled a new axle out of the junk pile. Fifty bucks from the hardware store allows me to sand, then relax by the pool with a cold one while watching the ball game and not having to worry about a home-made contraption blowing apart while I'm sharpening my bayonet and impaling me.

I applaud the ingenuity, however as a machinist i would have mounted the base of the axial with the u shape in the opposite direction. Should the belt get loose it wont come off the base no matter what speed you run or no matter how loose it could possibly be. Its only my 2 cents but it could make a significant difference in terms of saftey. Awesome idea thx for sharing.

Heres a couple of tips: Your belt is turning in the wrong direction. It should be traveling down so particulates aren't thrown in your face (you won't enjoy getting tiny shards of metal cut out of your eyes). Your brackets holding the bicycle hub should be turned around so the opening is up. That way if the hub comes loose it won't smash down on your fingers or throw or hurle your work piece at your hands. Sometimes when belts break ( which they will) they can tangle and could generate enough force to pull the hub from it slot even while bolted down securely. If the adjuster opening is facing up then the worst it will do is slam the hub deeper into the slot of the adjuster.
