Best of Isuro ‘Kamikaze’ Tanaka (Major League II)

In the Far East, mostly Japan, they don’t play very much on ice hockey. They play ice hockey ONLY for the Winter Olympic Games. Nothing more, nothing else. But when it’s baseball, they sure do play lots of that game.

Isuro ‘Kamikaze’ Tanaka (portrayed by Takaaki Ishibashi), who played for the Tokyo Giants in Japan, was transferred to the Cleveland Indians in the United States, as their catcher. And once you see for how he is, you’ll want to watch him again, and again and again. Hilarious baseball catcher.

I clearly remember. I am Japanese and was living in the US when this movie came out. My friend ask me to go to movie together and saw this without knowing Taka san is in the movie. When he showed up I was so surprised because I was not expecting to see Japanese comedy star in Hollywood movie. As I was the only one who can understand Japanese, I was laughing when no one was laughing. Great memory.

When Takaaki Ishibashi visited the major stadium, the current major league players walked up to the major league players and shook hands, and the NYY judge also shook hands with Takaaki Ishibashi himself.

You can see how high the influence of this movie is in the United States.

In the setting of the movie, he was introduced as the first player to challenge the major leagues from the Tokyo Giants, and he is a player who became a major league faster than Hideo Nomo. ( Takaaki often talks to active Japanese major leaguers as a joke)

As for how popular this movie was, Takaaki Ishibashi ranked first in the Japanese tax ranking entertainment industry that year.

That's why the appearance fee for Hollywood movies is so high.

When I look at Takaaki Ishibashi's YouTube now, I really sympathize with him that he really likes baseball.

それだけハリウッド映画の出演料というのが高いのです。

Love this movie! Hideo Nomo chose to wear number 16 on his jersey when he signed with Dodgers because of this guy wore 16 on this movie. Tanaka was a hustler of this team back them.

The amazing thing about this film is that it seamlessly integrates the actor, Takaaki Ishibashi, into the story, keeping his image as he would be in Japan.
In particular, the scene in which the owner is verbally abused makes good use of the stereotypical image of Japanese people that America has (or has had?).

Nomo chose 16 for the Dodgers to express his enormous gratitude to Ishibashi because Ishibashi thoroughly and wholeheartedly supported Nomo when there was a fierce backlash against Nomo from NPB and Japan's public for Nomo's move to leave NPB for MLB. Ishibashi is known for love of sports, in particular, baseball and boxing. Japan's athletes, including Nomo, Ichiro, and Ohtani, grew up with Ishibashi's TV and radio shows. Nomo'd been a fan of Ishibashi even before he became a pro in NPB.

"Kamikaze" Tanaka is once in a life time player.
Tanaka and Munenori Kawasaki are real japanese baseball legends, not Ichiro or Ohtani😌

Takatanaka is a legendary major leaguer. And he helped Hideo Nomo make it to the major leagues.
Without him, the history of Japanese major leaguers might have been different.
