Can we trust governments to tackle the climate emergency? | The Stream

On Friday, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said if carbon emissions are not scaled back, the world will continue to be on a "catastrophic pathway" toward 2.7 degree Celsius heating. But is the threat of even more dangerous levels of global warming enough to finally convince governments into making the ambitious changes necessary to avoid a further climate catastrophe?

In the latest warning from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), scientists say that unabated greenhouse gas emissions are pushing global temperatures and sea levels up faster than expected. An effective global response will require the world's richest countries to commit to significant reductions in burning fossil fuels.

The UN is using this week’s General Assembly meeting to build momentum on climate action ahead of November’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow. Also central to the UN's agenda is "climate financing" for smaller countries that may be struggling to adapt to climate change.

But governments of the world's largest economies are all still failing to meet commitments made in 2015 during the landmark Paris climate change agreement.

In the first of three shows in partnership with the UN General Assembly, we'll discuss how governments are responding to climate change. Does the political will exist for a multilateral solution to the climate emergency?

We should be careful on money usage, if you are not spending to earn back, then stop spending. Apparently my view on the solution is to venture into business.

They haven't tackled it for the last 40 years, why would anyone think that's going to change? The sickness is the system.

No way, most of them don't care.

Governments have to work together. We solve problems by working together. Not fighting with each other.

No . Everybody is talking and talking, and no one thinking of building a green world.

We the consumers need to lead the change with our purchasing $$. Don't buy products that harm the environment and buy the items that help. Like carrying your own metal or long lasting straw, using a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water, Stop buying bagged salads, switch to corn gas. Governments have to make large companies retrain and change their industries. everyone has to do their part.

Unfortunately, this title negates the fact that EVERY single INDIVIDUAL on Earth ALSO can affect climate change!!!

We are the governments, we are the policy changes (in a way) - we must insist on adapting to a new world and a new way

The words "trust" & "government" should never be used in the same sentence...

With fast understanding and actions safety will encrease, problems will drop. Humanity will be granted. How long does it takes until everybody will understand the good consequences of good actions.
This us what GOD teached us!

The best way to fight climate change that gov't should focus on? Is food production and animal agriculture. Why won't they focus in on that? Simple, there's no money involved in having people eat less meat and frankly, most of these gov't officials will gladly spend an evening out with their buddies eating $100 steaks.

You drive to work everyday! If your not changing that? Don’t bother

The statistics on India is wrong. India is one of the largest contributors to realizing Paris goal targets. We have set an affordable target and is moving towards renewable energy much faster than most of the countries. You must not bias yourself.

these African eco-activists have excellent analysis on abrupt global warming - the science was clear 25 years ago!! We don't need any more "science" to take action - we could have changed policies 25 years ago!! Yet even the environmental community relies on science all the time - instead of focused on policy change activism. Science can just tell us how doomed we are - and that is indeed fascinating. Science caused abrupt global warming and science will not save us.
