Future of Taste | How do our food choices affect climate change?

Did you know that the food we consume has a significant impact on climate change?
Our food production systems emit greenhouse gas emissions just like fossil fuels. But we don't talk enough about it. This is because, more than any other economic sector, agriculture creates a divide between the world that emits for survival and the one that emits for luxury. As the world prepares itself to be climate-responsible, we need to reset the connection between food and livelihood, nutrition and nature.

As consumers we are all part of the agricultural cycle - so it should be all our concern that this cycle is functioning. Sadly corporate greed in the whole field to table supply chain dictates and directs our crap practices. Powerful message - heard, understood and followed by too few.

Dear Down to Earth Team,

I am a big admirer of your work and enjoy incorporating your publications into my personal library. I was wondering if you offer a yearly compilation of content, perhaps an annual magazine, that gathers articles and features from throughout the year.

You have clearly and concisely stated the problem in a holistic manner.
Unfortunately the greedy western consumer is not enlightened to understand the issues or are hypocritical and do not want to understand the issues. No one wants to look at themselves in the mirror and only want to blame someone other than themselves…so they can keep doing what they are doing without having to look into their own conscience…

Very well put❤.
Large scale dairies with more than 4 cows should be discouraged…
Each farmer should only have cows only for domestic consumption of milk & farm activities…
More nutritionally diverse crops should be grown…
No need to completely eliminate meat, but should be occasional like once a week.

From what I understand, our landuse laws and certain 'regulations', that classify cash crops and food crops, is what's standing as a prohibitory regulations conundrum, that's stopping farmers with larger landholdings from going into mixed farming.
I do not think, just completely leaving out larger farmlands is anything good. Instead it is exactly those farmlands, that should be encouraged with accomodating changes in law and policy, to practice mixed farming.
Still keeping laws that require farmers to grow cash crops and good crops seperately is a huge wasted opportunity and denying a very safe method for farmers to manage financial loss by growing mixed cropping high revenue cash crops.
There is also no cohesive policies for integrated farming. Department of fisheries and department of agriculture is disjointed, leaving no support for rice farmers to grow fish, crabs or prawns with it.

Our lack of integration between different departments, lack of policies for intergrated and mixed farming and lack of political will to change regulations and laws inhibiting mixed cropping is the main problem.
Subsidies for select crops, unintentionally insentivice monoculture. Just adding a requirement of mixed cropping for qualifying for subsidies, itself will make a huge difference.

The solution for food security is most important, unless it is ensured that our population is well fed other options stand neglected, next the so called junk food should be taxed to keep its effects on climate change minimal, and finally its time our consumer forums unite to give a concise picture of the consumption patterns which would help the farmers with their crop pattern

In my opinion, New Zealand and Netherlands are putting the burden of reduction in emissions on farmers alone by imposing “Burp Tax” on them. It is unfair because:
(1) Farmers need alternative to be given and training to be provided to make the shift from cattle to vegetables growing for instance.
(2) This technique of discouraging by imposing tax is less likely to be efficient in my opinion. Better than imposing Burp tax on farmers would be to divide the responsibility of tax between farmers, sellers, consumers. However this might not help in climate goal because when it comes to what is known to meat eaters as essential food like wheat is for vegetarians, many will manage to pay the extra tax with ease or difficulty and those who won’t will be at risk of malnutrition. So the strategy is unethical.
(3) The only go forward way is to have an effective phase out plan in my opinion- give farmers what they need to switch to alternatives produce. Similar plan of transition needs to be created and explained to sellers and consumers as well. Phase out plan will ensure effective transition without putting any one or more sectors out of their livelihood or basic requirements.
