The Entire Witcher Story Explained

The Witcher tells its story in a non-linear fashion from three different points-of-view, so it can be a bit difficult to follow at first. It’s definitely not the kind of show that you can just leave on in the background and expect to follow, but once you do understand where the story is going, it’s a richly rewarding experience. If you need a recap or still have a few things you don’t understand about Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s stories, we’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at the explanation of the entire story of Netflix’s The Witcher so far.

Did you find The Witcher story confusing too?

The only confusing part was the lack of labeled times between the shots. Having read the books, I was pretty much on it.

One of the most confusing shows I’ve ever watched. Also one of the best.

It was definitely confusing and somebody who started viewing the tv show without knowing any background would have a tough time following the timeline.

While watching the beginning episodes I didn’t know that I was watching different timelines and by the time everything clicked I realized that I had been watching separate timelines, while understanding that, I’ve come to the conclusion it would’ve been better to know the year of the scenes while I was watching it in the first place

I loved the mixed timelines. When it finally added up it was awesome. I think it wouldnt have been so nice if they had done a normal timeline. In my own opinion

The last episode made it all make sense to me

I don't understand why everyone are complaining about confusing timelines.
At first it was confusing, but at the end it totally adds up.

I watched Season 1, read all of The Witcher books, and then re-watched Season 1.
Looking back, I thought they could have done a little better job making things clearer & easier to pick up on, especially if you're trying to gain new fans of the show.
However, I did enjoy the challenge of it all that first viewing, like a puzzle, and different compared to most shows.
Happy to hear Season 2 will be a lot more streamlined, good for character development and hopefully picking up more fans of an awesome story.

Definitely confused me at first, but once I realized the queen was dead, then not dead was when I started wondering about timelines. Also Cyrilla and Pavetta look so similar that it threw me off haha (might’ve butchered those names)

Were the timelines really that big an issue for viewers? I caught it on first viewing. My first clue was Stregobor looks old the first time we see him, and then he looks young the next time we meet him. Seeing the king and his sister being around ten years old, at the ball, was the one that sealed it. I think it was brilliant. Also, this isn't the first show to do that.

Didn't realize how weird the timeline and character plots were until we saw Geralt at Sintra (if that's how you spell it) before the Queen, when we had seen her jump out a window in the first episode! That also gets covered from Geralt's point of view later. I thought I was stupid or something at first when I was confused 🤣🤣🤣

*Geralt's timeline* in season 1 is not over 20 years, rather *atleast over 30 years* period.
Renfri mentions to Geralt about Calanthe winning battle of Hochebuz at that time.
Calanthe and Ciri also discuss about this battle when Calanthe was of Ciri's age.

It shows the years that past by showing when the incest king and queen that had the cursed princess were children when geralt met the lioness of cintra .. then geralt seen him as a old king as he attempt to save the princess

But why doesn't Jeskier getting older?
I think he is with geralt for almost a decade. But he remains same.

Any scenes with Yennefer - Past
Any scenes with Geralt - Present
Any scenes with Ciri - Future

Eventually they all submerge, not that hard to follow. Critics just saw 1st episode and passed the judgement for the whole season based off that. Not sure if bad or impatient.

Thank you so much. I needed this video. The way you explained it will help me when I watch the series again for the 3rd time.

This is the first time I've watched an explainer and still feel lost. Apparently I am one of thousands who watch even though we are somewhat to completely lost as to what's happening. Yet, its so good, we don't care. Can only imagine how good this story is when you understand it!
