The Hospital PAGNI or (the University Hospital of Heraklion) was founded in 1989 and is the largest hospital of Crete. PAGNI is even one of the biggest public hospitals of Greece. The modern hospital provides secondary and tertiary health care and has a capacity of 750 beds. It is closely connected to the school of Medicine which lies behind the hospital and is part of the University of Crete. Every year some 5,000 patients are treated in the hospital and 170,000 use the hospital outpatient department. There are 130 MD and PHD Professors mostly trained in Europe and the United States. The Hospital has clinical departments, diagnostic and laboratory tests and a famous cardiological unit with a wide range of surgical procedures, including heart transplantations. It is a modern hospital with an implemented Management Information System and other e-health applications. Moreover, the University Hospital is working in the frontline of Innovation and implementing unique projects through the European Horizon 2020 (-2027) funding program. The complex has also a hospital chapel.
