What was David Bohm Thinking? Bohmian Mechanics.

This is not a video about formulating Bohmian Mechanics. Instead, in this video we read some of the text of David Bohm to try and understand his motivations behind his Bohmian Mechanics.

I pick older texts and read excerpts from them on Wed. Stop by sometime to see!

So you don't understand either Copenhagen or Bohm's idea. Cool. That's totally worth making a video about. :-)

David Bohm is a very unusual thinker. Unlike other physics professors of his time, Bohm thought deeply about Epistemology and philosophy as well as physics. Where others quickly accepted assumptions that came with the status quo paradigm, Bohm was careful and methodical about everything he thought through. This propensity made him excellent as a physicist but frustrating for his colleagues---who had been already ground down by Bohr relentlessly until they got his paradigm and believed it.

Einstein took Bohm as a PhD student which yells you how gifted he was considered.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it's clear that Copenhagen and similar interpretations of quantum theory have stalled with regards to the measurement problem and with regards to quantum gravity.

So we know: shut up and calculate has not progressed quantum mechanics very much.

Similarly, Mayan astronomy didn't professor that much either---they could predict things, but not answer why. Why is important.

So now, many ideas are coming out to solve the problems---each assumption is being sacrificed to see if another approach is possible, including violating Bell's Statistical Independence.

It appears the biggest problem to overcome with Bohmian/De Broglie Mechanics is how to find an equivalent to quantum field theory. I know people are working on this.

Why did you say “oh I see” at the end? And why did you say “in our theory, time is an illusion”? I appreciate any clarifications

Yes, It is real. Just needs tweaking.

This guy acts like he is a better physicist than Bohm
