The term batswana has been interpreted by different scholars to mean different things like firstly:

Batshwana which is the original term that evolved to batswana it was said to mean "they look alike or resemble one another"

And then they went on to say it means blackish light skinned people by other groups looking at the complexion of the Batshwana.

And then they said batswana( batswa-na) meaning those who came from one another in that they separated and became different tribes.

The final conclusion of scholars was that Batshwana(bathwana/bathuana/bathua, bacwana) meaning people of small stature became of their small physic because they are small like children and they were actually referring to the khoisan people.

A batswana clan called bakgalagadi/bakalahari of the kgalagadi/kalahari desert which means people of the desert are still using the old sterm they call a child mocwana/motswana.

Mme fela ke dumela gore batwana ba feleditse ba itlhophela tlhalosa e bone ba boneng e na le tlhaloganyo go ya ka bone fa lebelela pakafitileng ya bone ka gore, remember they did not give the name to themselves but it was other groups who started referring to them with the name Batshwana/batswana.
