Selecting the equipment to buy is the job of a senior network engineer. Networking students should focus on labs( GNS3 or EVE-NG).There is a lot more involved when selecting the vendor - support contract cost for example. You don't buy enterprise equipment without a support contract. Another thing will be the experience with Cisco TAC.
