The Wagner Group and its chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, had announced a revolt against Russia, vowed to topple the military government, and asked the Russians to join their forces against the military regime. Prigozhin had also announced that his strong force of 25,000 would march towards Moscow and destroy anything that came in between. Russian President Vladimir Putin had accused the Wagner Group and its Chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, of mounting an armed uprising and ordered his arrest. Charges of mutiny were also brought against Prigozhin. However, moments after the Russian President had announced that he would go after these traitors and that this was nothing but treachery, Wagner and his forces retreated, stating that the move was not against the government but just to show their protest, and they retreated to avoid Russian bloodshed. Putin has replied that the rebellion wanted to see Russia choked in a bloody civil war, and they would have been stopped anyway. Putin also lashed out at Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy and his Western Allies for triggering the rebellion. Prigozhin is currently banished from Russia, but his location is unknown.
