Is Earth Being Monitored By UFOs? | Robin Hanson

Показать описание

Is Earth being monitored by (UFOs?) an advanced civilization one million years ahead of us? And does this alien civilization actually share an ancient past with humanity? Economist Robin Hanson explores a provocative theory suggesting that highly evolved extraterrestrials may be subtly observing us—either as caretakers or as part of a long-running experiment. From there, the conversation delves into the intricacies of academic funding and the peer review process.

When the greatest podcast on Youtube is discussing aliens, you bet I'm crossing anything else I was going to listen to tonight right off the list! Thanks so much for what you do, Curt!

Perfect way to get back in the alien/ufo discussion 🤝🙏

I listened to your interview with Richard dolan 3 hours ago and now this. That was such a good interview. Richard rarely gets questions that challenge him intellectually.

Curt, you do a wonderful job wrapping your brain around what people are attempting to say. Everyone has a different frame of reference and unique way of articulating ideas. I'm always blown away at your ability to not only grasp but also paraphrase in a sometimes more listener friendly way without loosing detail. I'm not going to lie sometimes even after you've done your thing in confirming you understand by rearticulating my brain has trouble keeping up but you do an epic job doubling my chances of comprehension. I really enjoy listening.

I recently had a thought and I don't have all the details worked out but it does coincidentally offer an alternative to this episodes initial question. "Where are they?" I do like that your guest dosnt mind diving deeper than"idk"and actually attempts to build a narrat8ve solution. What if it's not so much a rule to not expand but that within our observability it is seen by those outside as a dead end we just don't realize yet for lack of understanding the cosmos. As an example what if the universe isn't expanding except from this vantage point and what's happening is we are being pulled into some unknown cosmological phenomenon that like a black hole has a point of no return which our galaxy passed through. What if the milky way had been evacuated long ago, it's possible we didn't exist until after life had withdrawn from this particular piece of the universe. What if nhi and uap are a remote attempt at documenting any life left behind or a study to see if life is possible within the dismal singularity that pulls further and further out of reach. When we can finally see within another galaxy will we realize that it is only the milky way not frothing with life.

Great episode! I particularly enjoyed the first half (Who doesn't love thinking about aliens?). I love in depth weedy logic trains in general. I would also love to see an episode similarly getting into the weeds about Dark Forest Theory/Game theory, and really explore the boundaries of these topics. Fascinating topics Curt!

Kurt you are truly a master at steering a conversation organically thought the most important (and pertinent) areas of a guest's expertise or contribution, all the while cunningly stepping us through what seems like simply the most engaging interview possible.

You've out done yourself this time mate. Many many thanks.

I disagree with his logic. When questioning "why would they be here? We can't see them in any galaxies yet they're here?" he fails to take into account a plethora of factors. Like Curt said, how could we ever know what they're doing? Why they're doing it? They're a species thousands, maybe millions of years ahead of us, to try and understand their reasoning or logic just by guessing based on what we currently know at our level of technology and knowledge is silly. He responds with "We know biology, evolution, how species and we act" Yea, animals act similarly when it comes to survival, but what about intelligence? Humans behave very oddly compared to all other species simply because we have If we had an unlimited source of energy, we wouldn't be anywhere near the same as we are now - if we find a way to transcend physicalism, if we find a way to utilize consciousness itself, these will change how we are, how we act by degrees that we could never begin to predict.

Then he questions why we don't see them, right now "we" think that the best way for a civilization to expand is by building a dyson sphere/ring/swarm. This is based off our current understanding of physics, if we in 100 years discover that we can extract energy directly from space/time itself and the object is the size of a box - the whole concept of a dyson sphere completely disappears and becomes a joke - "imagine deconstructing 10 planets over the course of 500 years to build this thing that takes 20 years to service, when you could just use this box". Again, he is restricting himself to what he believes to be the truth - our "theoretical" physics, that is accurate enough to give us health care and wound/disease treatment, Handheld computers, cars, planes, etc but not good enough to get us to the stars, to heal our entire bodies, to utilize/manipulate consciousness directly, to utilize gravity, etc, so it isn't anywhere near "complete" so much as its at this "point" in what seems to be an exponential growth of knowledge (one hopes). There are things we don't know yet that we can achieve, but as more discoveries are made and the more we know, the more we can predict accurately. People 10, 000 years ago will see what we have today as magic, just as we would see what we will have in 10, 000 years from now as magic. It will sound silly, impossible, only because our current physics isn't there yet, no where damned close.

There is more we don't know that we don't know, then there is we know that we don't know. Hell of a lot less of "We or something like that

I always thought I understood my emotions, but A Mind Made of Storms cracked open a whole new level of self-awareness. I was stuck in a cycle of overthinking, but this book helped me embrace the chaos within. Instead of fighting my thoughts, I started using them to fuel my growth. It's like I finally understood how to thrive in the storm. Anyone else feel this shift?

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Robin Hanson. I last heard from him three years ago from a tedtalk about criminal justice reform. He is doing great work in my eyes. He can be dramatic but he gets the point across for many things we all know to be true but don't fully understand. I get strong autism vibes from him, which means his sense of justice drives him on and I also understand that. I am grateful for his work and perspective. Good people giving ground, because of selfishness, fear, ignorance or what have you, is the reason for so much corruption. Stop giving ground good peeps.

The Fermi paradox is like most paradoxes that get solved by carefully examining their premises. Here the premise is “we don’t see the aliens” that should be translated into “we have a lot of evidence compatible with, without being proof of, the existence of aliens here on earth”.

This is one of your most interesting and provocative podcasts in in while. You could talk to Robin for a whole week and I would tune in, listening intently. The Universe is so vast that if any race of beings found a way to travel across it effectively, they would be like humans compared to microbes. Could we even be aware of them from our own tiny perspective?

Regarding the theory of aliens possessing human-like drives such as social hierarchy to dominate over humans is a projection. Jacques Vallee's book "Messenger's of Deception" posits an interesting theory which is centered around raising human consciousness.

Curt, if you would have changed the title to Predictive Markets view of Prof. Hansen maybe some of the viewers who got lost in the beginning may appreciate your interview. I just discovered your guest from another podcast and had to relisten to better understand. Overall, thank you for this.
