There's a long history of actors playing fake twins, doppelgangers, and doubles in movies. This episode of "Movies Insider" traces the evolution of doubling effects in Hollywood, from the split screens of the original "Parent Trap" to the rotoscoping and green-screen composites used on Nicolas Cage in 2002's "Adaptation," all the way up to the advanced face and head replacements of 2019's "Us."

We take a look at how technology dating from the early silent-film era has advanced to make movies like "Us," "The Social Network," and more possible, and break down why the Jeremy Irons twins in David Cronenberg's 1988 movie "Dead Ringers" represented a turning point for twin effects.

Find out how the artists at Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies VFX cloned Paul Rudd for his 2019 Netflix series "Living with Yourself," how Rodeo FX created Jake Gyllenhaal doppelgangers for Denis Villeneuve's 2013 thriller "Enemy," and how NVIZ Studio pulled off its twinning effects on Tom Hardy in 2015's "Legend" and Seth Rogen in 2020's "An American Pickle" — and learn why late 19th-century optical effects laid the foundation for all this groundbreaking effects work in the 21st century.

Not once during Us was I ever taken out of the movie. It was so seamless, it never crossed my mind how difficult it must have been to make.

I remember watching the original Parent Trap when I was a kid and seeing the name Hayley Mills twice in the credits... I thought it was really strange to give both your twin daughters the same name 🤦‍♀️

I guess there aren't that many twins who want to be actors.

People who ask ‘why can’t they use real Twins?’, well sometimes one of the twins may not be an actor so they can’t act. Audition process is also grueling; they want to use a good actor to portray certain characters.

I'm so glad you mentioned Orphan Black, the work behind that show is amazing.

On the other side, child characters are often double-cast with twins (for a single role). This is because of child labor laws limiting the number of hours a child can work in a day.

“What Happened to Monday” seemed like a better movie to use.

I think they should have mentioned the scene in Harry Potter when all the characters turn into Harry.

Twin actor here: these techniques are super cool. At the same time, there’s definitely room for real twins to be used more often. I get that we’re a novelty, that’s one of the realities of having a guy who looks just like you, but at least let us do the twin stuff 😂

Great breakdown of doubles in cinema and makes you appreciate the effort that went into Us. Also glad to see the shout out to BBC's Orphan Black, which is one of the best doubles effects in all of cinema and theater. seriously give it a look if you haven't seen it, it's freaking amazing

When my identical twin sister and I saw Harry Potter in theaters when we were around 13, we both freaked out because we immediately recognized that Fred and George were portrayed by actual identical twins instead of one person pretending to be identical twins. Having met at least 9 other sets of identical twins in my life, there are always tiny physical differences between identical twins. Mole placement, scars, and even a small difference in height is pretty common. I'm really disappointed that this video didn't address the Phelps twins.

They want big name actors for movies. They cast the Weasley twins because they were specifically casting for unknown kids in Harry Potter, but the vast majority of movies rely on star power to sell

No mention of What Happened To Monday? Sheesh that movie had Noomi Rapace played a set of identical septuplets and they all had different personalities.

Not all twins want to be actors, people. Stop mentioning they should've used real twins
